Skidaway Campground near Savannah

We’re close enough to South Carolina to pop over and visit this National Wildlife Refuge. Carol got to see her first alligator or crocodile ,one of those. We thought about visiting an Alligator farm but it just seemed wrong.
Now they charge you for this RV site, but this great site has full hookups including sewer and cable TV. The site is 100 ft long and 30 ft wide.

Many cities have hop-on hop-off tours. They’re an excellent way to see a congested tourist area. The Savanna Historical Tour allows dogs. And during the tour Robert Louis Stevenson and other historical figures in costume hop-on and talk to you.

For 44 years Florence came to the Savannah river everyday to wave to incoming ships.
So they erected a statue to her called The Waving Girl why not. I like southerners.
The Legend of Florence Martus

Florence Martus (1868 – 1943), was known well by Savannahians and sailors of the sea as the Waving Girl. The daughter of a sergeant stationed at Fort Pulaski, Florence later moved to a cottage along the river near the entrance of the harbor with her brother George, when he was transferred from the Cockspur Island Lighthouse to the Elba Island Lighthouse.

Fort Pulaski National Monument is on the way to Tybee Island.

SAVANNAH’S OLD HOMES AND CHURCHES MAKE A GREAT TOUR also they’re a great backdrop for many films, including Forest Gump.

Savannah has some great architecture. Apparently it was built around 20 squares. I think that was a military thing. Worth the tour. https://www.visit-historic-savannah.com/savannah-historic-homes.html

Crooked River State Park

This is a campground that looks like what people envision when they buy a camping trailer. Wide spaces, deep, well placed utilities, so who needs Disneyland. https://gastateparks.org/CrookedRiver/

So there’s these little black bugs that dive bomb my skin and leave a small bite. The Camp-host said they weren’t black, or maybe they were. There are non-biting gnats she said. But, I said something’s biting me. She said, go to the store and buy some olive oil and coconut based “afro-sheen”hairspray. So we bought some and sprayed it on our bodies, sprayed the dogs and rushed indoors. Is the spray effective ? We don’t know yet. More later.

We’re camped near St Mary .We’re taking a river boat tour tomorrow.
Crooked River is part of a National Paddling path.

The place to visit in this area is Amelia Island and the town of Fernandina. https://www.visitflorida.com/en-us/cities/fernandina-beach.html

Crooked River Campground

We took a river tour which took us near Cumberland Island. During the turn of a the previous century, the Carnegie family wanted to winter in Florida on Jekyll, about 20 miles north of Cumberland Island. A group of old money people had a 58 bedroom home at which they would spend many winters, 1900 -1920s. The Carnegie’s were upset when they were rebuffed and purchased so they Cumberland Island 20 miles south of Jekyll Island. They built a 59 bedroom home. Ms. Carnegie also purchased , in todays dollars, millions of dollars worth of race horses and turned them loose on the island.

Descendant of race horses on the island today.

Shrimp boats, local tastes much better.

Apparently John Kennedy Jr was married at the hotel on this island. Small hotel $750 a night. Wedding prices begin at $70,000. Its an Island don’t forget.
